Ever felt frustrated or overwhelmed? You can develop negative thinking patterns because you’re frustrated by challenges. That negative outlook then makes it even harder to overcome the challenges and move forward.
Here are five practical suggestions to change your mindset to a positive one.
1 – Squash the ANTs
In his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” Dr. Daniel Amen talks about ANTs— Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are reactionary negative thoughts, like “Those people are laughing, they must be talking about me,” or “The boss wants to see me. It must be bad!” When you notice those thoughts, realize they’re nothing more than ANTs and squash them!
2 – Practice loving, touching, and squeezing!
You don’t have to be an expert to know the benefits of a good hug. Positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets is an instant pick-me-up! Just be sure they’re okay with it, of course.
3 – Increase your social activity
By increasing social activity, you decrease loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people, and their positive energy will affect your thoughts in a positive way!
4 – Volunteer or help someone
Everyone feels good after helping others! You can volunteer your time, money, or resources. The mores positive energy you put out into the world, the more you’ll receive in return. Volunteer through a nonprofit organization, or just help someone you know.
5 – Use pattern interrupts
If you find yourself spiraling downward with negative thoughts, a great way to stop it is to do something completely different using a pattern interrupt. Try changing your physical environment. Go for a walk or sit outside! You can also call a friend, pick up a book, or turn on some uplifting music.
